The Red Shoes
hospitalnursing If youre on your feet all day, learn how to find shoes that really fit. If you wear shoes that dont fit well, you may be inviting or exacerbating bunions, corns, calluses hammertoes, and other foot problems. To prevent problems and keep you on your feet, the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, the National Shoe Retailers Association, and the Pedorthic Footwear Association offer this advice: 1. Evaluate shoes by how they fit, not by the size marked on the label. Sizes vary among brands and styles.

It is difficult to write objectively and dispassionately of something about which one feels strongly, for or against. Tell me a mans a foxhunter and I loves him at once said Mr Jorrocks. Today he is more likely to be an object of censure, Mr Jorrocks too. The future of hunting hangs in the balance, a prospect unthinkable to Will Ogilvie who wrote in the twenties:
H UNTING As a human activity, hunting is magnified in its significance by a deceptively simple feature: the evasiveness or resistance exhibited routinely by prey. Because of the behavioral challenges that it presents, hunting has had far-reaching consequences for key aspects of human social, psychological, and cultural life. Since the mid-1960s, for example, anthropologists have argued that hunting may have been a powerful and fundamental force shaping the very nature of cooperation and sharing among early humans. One such claim involves what the behavioral ecologist Bruce Winterhalder calls the risk reduction hypothesis. The failure rate of hunters is notoriously high. Even among experienced, highly skilled subsistence hunters who pursue big game animals, any one hunt is much more likely to result in failure than in success. Studying the Hadza of Tanzania in 1993, the anthropologist Kristen Hawkes reported that when hunting big game, Hadza men failed to make a kill 97 of every 100 days that they hunted. When a large game animal is killed, it often represents a windfall in excess of what any one hunter and his or her immediate family can consume. These circumstances promote reciprocity and sharing among hunters. By sharing the meat provided by a successful kill, a hunter effectively buys insurance against failure in future hunts. When, in the future, he or she fails to kill prey, other successful hunters with whom meat has been shared previously will reciprocate and provide meat to the unsuccessful hunter. The science writer Matt Ridley argues that the cooperation and reciprocity associated with hunting may help constitute the basis of systems of moral and ethical culture. In short, hunting is an activity that promotes cooperation and sharing because it entails the pursuit of a highly valued resource, access to which is unpredictable and risky.

After seeing the picture on page 75 of the October 2005 issue, I beg the question, What on Earth were you thinking?! publishing such a spectacle for the world to see. The photo of target practice to end the life of a defenseless and otherwise benign beast sends all the wrong messages about guns and those who own and use them. I was particularly dismayed because it gives gun owners and users the reputation as senseless takers of life for no other reason but for target practice. Shame on the ones using their weapons this way!
Is your credit union on the hunt for a new core processing system? If so, be aware that nobodys going to make it easy for you. In fact, sometimes theyll do quite the opposite. If vendors arent going to tell you what you want to know, who is? You are, but youll have to do a little digging. Dont accept proclamations at face value. Unearth some skeletons. And never lose sight of the way you want to serve your members, because thats why youre looking for a core processor in the first place.

PLEASANTON — From the moment Bill Wheeler told his friends and family that he was serious about getting into the limousine business, few took him for his word. Wheeler was the last person they could picture going into a business that revolved around punctuality. “I had never been on time anywhere in my life,” Wheeler said. “What people didnt understand is that if I were paid to be on time, then thats an entirely different matter.”
GREAT food, cheap wine and an unspoilt landscape make France the most popular destination with Britons for short breaks and longer holidays. JACQUI THAKE takes a trip through the countryside of Limousin. AS we planned the morning hike across the countryside of Limousin our French hostess urged us: “Make sure you wear your baskets.” Confusion turned to hilarity when we realised that baskets in French meant trainers. Anyway, suitably booted for our expedition round the magnificent Lac du Causse in the Couze Valley, we set off in high spirits as the sun had come out at last.
Limousine services are a vital part of daily life or many Central Pennsylvania companies. Just ask Barb Gabler, executive assistant to Stephen L. Gurba, president and CEO of Bulova Technologies in Lancaster, which manufactures electromechanical devices. “I think theyre a necessary feature in business life,” Gabler said. “When their services are needed, we rely on their availability and punctuality. When we need them, we need them to be there on time.”

The Business, Steve Morris and Graham Willcocks, Hodder Stoughton, 2001, paperback, 134 pages, L9.99, ISBN: 0 340 78911 5. Tel: 020 7873 6247. Published under the Business Dynamics banner by Hodder Stoughton, this business resource book is bulging with challenging questions and real world references. It is intended for students in the 14-19 age range. The books handling of business principles is dynamic. It takes a fresh approach to the basics and provides evidence on which to base investigations. It makes use of case studies to draw students into concepts and explain how companies operate and how they contribute to the economy. The book is organised into four interesting sections, categorising key concepts and illustrating the application of these concepts through discussion of various organisations within relevant industries.
The proposed ordinance being considered by the Orem City Council would allow the following businesses to locate in historic homes:
Competing against the big box retailers is a challenge for Kansas small-town businesses, but state programs can help their owners work toward success. “There are so many challenges that face small mom-and-pop or individual business owners,” said Jeanne Stinson, state coordinator for the Kansas Main Street Program. “Theyre faced with huge competition from the big box stores and most of them, I think, in Kansas have learned to live with that competition. Its not going to go away.” “Promotional activities are one of those four points,” she said. “We also look to the organization itself — their group. Who is doing this work and making sure that its adequately funded, that they have the ability to do their advertising and to make assistance to businesses.”

Real estate is a popular investment among Canadians. There are several advantages to investing in real estate. Real estate is leveraged. You may pay only a fraction (as low as 10%) of what the property is worth when you buy it. Real estate has utility. If you buy stocks or bonds, you cannot do anything with them; but when you buy real estate, you can use it until you sell it. For example, you can live in a house.

Lower-than-average counters, toe spaces that are high and deep For anyone using a wheelchair, its essential that rooms have at least a 5- by 5-foot open space so the chair can be turned. To accomplish this, the remodel incorporated space from what had been a separate dining area. Now the kitchen is arranged along three walls; the stove lines up with a kneehole sink. At 33 inches high, most counters in this kitchen are a few inches lower than standard height (the dishwasher is under a regular 36-inch counter). Toe space under all cabinets is an extra-generous 7 1/2 inches high and 8 1/2 inches deep. Next to the ovens, a baking center-pantry can be closed off by doors that slide back into the walls. Open, it has a sturdy pullout maple board at the right height for mixing up a cake or rolling out biscuits. Pots, pans, and some dishes are stored in drawers below the counter. Adjoining the pantry is a built-in wall oven with a microwave underneath. The built-in 47-inch-diameter dining table is 27 inches high. With only a center pedestal, its easy to roll up to. The only space added during the remodel is a 6 1/2- by 12-foot sunroom with double glass doors that slide open to the garden. A long 19-inch-high built-in bench on one wall of the sunroom has a 4-inch foam pad that makes it a great spot for sunny catnaps. PHOTO : Remodeled kitchen works hard for wheelchair independence. It has space for chair to turn, PHOTO : lower-than-standard countertops, kneehole sink, and many small adjustments for the cook
Out for views, up for light: those are the directions this tall, four-sided bay takes to gain garden views. Since the shallow pitch of the existing roof would have cramped the high, open greenhouse look the Starrs wanted, designer Linda Thornton of Carmel, California, gave the bay an octagonal roof of its own. It rises almost 3 feet above the existing roof, radiating from a central point above the eave line. Half of it notches into the old roof; the other half extends beyond to top the four glass walls. Only three support posts obstruct garden views through the glass panes. Outside, a planter wraps around the base of the bay, softening the expanse of concrete patio.
Assembling cabinets yourself can free up money for other kitchen detailsCabinets devour kitchen budgets. So cutting comers with them can allow you to upgrade other parts of a remodel. While aesthetics, not low cost, drove the design choices in architect Jon Stoumens kitchen in Healdsburg, California, the remodel also shows how this creative trick can work for limited budgets.First, Stoumen and his family rigorously studied the Ikea catalog. Once they had measured out and triple-checked exactly what they needed and how it would all fit together, they borrowed a track and made a weekend run to Los Angeles. With unassembled frames, doors, hinges, pulls, and other accessories in tow, they headed back north to put the parts together.

Just as lead in products made in China has become big news, California regulators are preparing to crack down on the makers and distributors of jewelry sold in the state found to contain lead. The state Department of Toxic Substances Control is in charge of enforcing this law. In a posting on the agencys Web site, officials said they have already begun stepping up enforcement, both responding to consumer or worker complaints and conducting marketplace surveillance. However, the department wont be looking at dozens of companies that last year reached an agreement with then-Attorney General Bill Lockyer to limit lead content in the jewelry they make or sell. Major retailers including Saks Inc.; Liz Clairborne Inc.: Burlington Coat Factory Warehouse Corp., Target Corp. and Sears Corp. signed on to the agreement, as did manufacturers like Arden Jewelry Manufacturing Co.
The October Co. The October Co. offers the new Triple-Tier Jewelry System and the DeLuxe 32 Compartment Jewelry Tray (shown). The small molded piece of polyvinyl chloride known as the credit card has transformed the American and the world economy and promises to be at the heart of the future economic system of the world. Social scientists have long recognized that the things people buy profoundly affect the way they live. Microwave ovens refrigerators air conditioners televisions computers the birth control pill antibiotics–all have affected peoples lives in profound ways. The credit card has changed peoples lives as well for it allows unprecedented access to a world of goods. The emergence of credit cards as a dominant mode of economic transaction has changed the way people live the way they do things the way they think their sense of well being and their values. When credit cards entered American life ordinary people could only dream of an affluent life style. Credit cards changed all that.Credit cards were born in the embarrassment of Francis X. McNamara in 1950. Entertaining clients in a New York City restaurant Mr. McNamara reached for his wallet only to find he had not brought money. Though his wife drove into town with the money McNamara went home vowing never to experience such disgrace again. To guarantee it he created the Diners Club Card a simple plastic card that would serve in place of cash at any establishment that agreed to accept it. It was a revolutionary concept.
CREDIT CARDS Credit cards make buying things so easy. The difficult part comes when the bills start rolling in and the interest rates keep adding up. If you have ever looked at the list of bankruptcies published in this newspaper, you know Kansans have a problem with credit cards.

Broker Willis Group has unveiled a new publication, The Willis Worldwide Directory of Directors and Officers Liability, the firm has announced. The guide details the potential personal liabilities of directors in 51 countries in Africa, Latin America, North America, Asia, Australia, Europe and the Middle East. The reference guide is targeted at senior level executives, corporate counsels, company secretaries and risk managers. PricewaterhouscCoopers has released a new guidebook called How to Align Security with Your Strategic Business Objectives, that explains how companies can think about their security strategies based on five steps: assess, analyze, strategize, align and communicate. The guide uses the firms SecurityATLAS framework, which helps companies develop, deliver, communicate and maintain an enterprise-wide information security strategy.
Perhaps more than any other specialists in the information science professions, archivists are encountering a myriad of changes brought about by a global information society, digital technology, and by the democratization of governments, institutions, and consumer advocacy.A primary reason for the dramatic impact electronic access has on reference service in archives and manuscripts is related to the philosophical/theoretical differences among professionals about the nature of archives collections, their organization, and their use. Where one comes down on the side of purpose, provenance, access, and users influences greatly the approach to reference service. The author of one paper quotes Carolyn Heald, saying, “In the area of reference and user services, archivists are particularly recalcitrant, lagging behind their library companions by more than 100 years” (p. 37).While Reference Services for Archives and Manuscripts is very timely, one might ask about its intended audience and need. Wont most practitioners be familiar with the descriptive accounts of services and technological developments in the field? Probably not - if Cohen is correct. Cohen says that archival reference is entering into uncharted waters when dealing with computer files on the Internet. She is correct in saying, “If such a practice becomes widespread, the repository will be a changed place, necessitating a new relationship between archivists and researchers who have no face-to-face contact.” Indeed, the papers in this collection indicate that the repository is already a changed place - and many more changes are in store for all but the most recalcitrant of the gate keepers.

Acne MedicationAcne is a skin condition in which pimples (comedones) appear on the skin, usually on the face, chest, or back. Adolescents and young adults are most often afflicted. Acne tends to be more severe in males; however, with females, acne may persist into adulthood. The skin has hair follicles that each contains a hair shaft and an oil gland. The oil glands continuously produce and secrete oil to lubricate and protect the skin. However, when dead skin cells and oil (sebum) build up inside the follicle and close off the follicles pore, pimples appear, in the form of either blackheads or whiteheads. If the plugging material protrudes from the opening at the surface of the skin, this plug of oil and dead cells darkens, forming blackheads; if the plugging material does not protrude, whiteheads form. This type of acne is referred to as comedonal. When the accumulated material of a closed-off pimple causes the follicular wall to rupture, an internal inflammatory reaction occurs, causing oil, dead cells, and bacteria to spill onto the skin. The skin around the pore becomes red and inflamed, and the result is inflammatory acne. When white blood cells infiltrate the area to repair the inflammation, papules, nodules, and cysts may develop. Papules form near the surface of the skin, whereas nodules and cysts are caused by inflammation deeper in the skin.

LAWYERS who had wanted General Pinochet extradited were still trying early last week to decide what “legal steps” they could take to stop him going to Chile. For some reason I found myself thinking of the sad advertisements one used to see occasionally in the personal columns: “Public school man seeks interesting job, anything legal considered.” But of course I was confusing two different functions of the word legal. Ethical began by meaning “to do with ethics”, and only later came to mean being good. The purist in me still winces when someone says “aesthetic” when they mean “in good taste”. (Aesthetic originally meant “to do with the science of perception”, then “to do with taste”, good, bad or indifferent.) But there was never any need for legal to carry two meanings, because theres a perfectly good alternative that takes half the burden off it: lawful, a nice old word from the late Middle Ages (its parent word, law, appears to be of ancient Scandinavian origin). Everyone understands the difference between “legal business” and the “lawful business” that most of us spend our lives going about. Why couldnt those job-seekers have put “anything lawful considered”? Lawyers use lawful, too; they speak of a “lawful killing”. They dont say “a legal killing” (which, if it meant anything, would presumably refer to their fees).
As Gemstar-TV Guide International Inc. re-launches a bigger version of its television programming guide, the company faces rising legal costs associated with a Securities and Exchange Commission inquiry of its former officers. Several former officers, including founder Henry Yuen, are under investigation by the SEC for inflating licensing revenues. The trial has been put on hold as both sides battle over whether their severance payments may be frozen. For the April-June period, Gemstar reduced legal expenses by $5.8 million to $600,000. But the company also filed a complaint last month against its former insurance carriers alleging they have failed to pay claims filed under its policies.

Some legal advice on aspects of the Internet. David Lewis (1) E-payment and e-money trends are you protected? The full potential of the Internet will only be realised when electronic payment systems are more secure. Currently the Internet lacks a fast, easy and secure way to let consumers buy and sell electronically, and theres no electronic money system on the market that is legal tender.

Consider adding a legal service plan to your employee perks A recent study found that three lawsuits are filed every second in the United States. That means most people are more likely to be involved in some sort of legal action over the next year than to be hospitalized. And, many of those people will be your credit unions employees. Employers struggling with a tight job market are learning that providing legal services as a benefit is a low-cost, low-hassle incentive for prospective and current employees. The plans cost $10-$16 per month for full family coverage and rarely increase in cost no matter how many employees use the services.

The home-cleaning experts at Hoover recommend weekly or more frequent vacuuming with a Hoover upright with an allergen-filtration system. For many people, spring is considered the high season for allergies. But for some homeowners who dont routinely and thoroughly clean their carpets, the sniffling and sneezing associated with allergies may persist yearround. Deep cleaning, a job once handled mainly by professional carpet cleaners, can be done quickly and effectively by consumers with a Steamvac deep cleaner. The cleaner distributes a solution of hot tap water and special detergent into the carpet, agitates the fibers with its exclusive, five rotating-brush system and then extracts the solution containing dirt. The five-brush agitation system and carpet detergent helps release the dirt and allergens from the carpet fibers for removal by the Steamvac deep cleaner.
Suited for use with low-moisture portable carpet extractors, self-contained units, or truck-mount extractors, ECC (Environmental Carpet Cleaner) turns soils and contaminants into free-rinsing soaps that neutralize alkaline or acid residues and remove them from carpets and upholstery. Product cleans carpets and leaves them with a neutral pH. ECC (Environmental Carpet Cleaner), just introduced by U.S. Products, cleans without using environmentally harmful chemicals.
After the death of his sister, Rebecca, four years ago, Jaym Wolfe considered abandoning the carpet-cleaning trade in which he had worked for more than two decades. Instead, his sorrow led him in another direction. This past summer, Wolfe founded a new business, TerraClean Eco-effective Carpet Care, which uses cleaning solutions that are nontoxic and environmentally friendly. The health hazards of working with carpet-cleaning chemicals were always in the back of Jaym Wolfes mind. He had experienced headaches, nausea and cracked skin on his hands and fingers while cleaning carpets - everyone in the business did. It went with the territory.

A PATENTLY PERFECT PROFESSION Still, another option intrigued her-a law career. “I decided I wanted an entire change,” says Feeman, now a patent lawyer for the Silicon Valley law firm Howrey Simon. At the time Feeman looked at the move not as the next step in her engineering career but as a clean break, she says. In fact, she hadnt even planned on specializing in patent law, a route commonly taken by engineers because it allows them to apply their technical skills to the law. Feeman initially preferred more “touchy-feely” law and viewed patent law as merely a fall-back option. As a student at Boston College Law School, she developed a passion for civil rights and public interest work, and outside the classroom became involved in the petition process to get clemency for some battered women who had murdered their husbands.

Study investigates the properties and feasibility of concrete made with recycled concrete as aggregate This article presents major findings of a wide-scale study, supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF), having three main objectives: * First, to present an overview of properties of concrete made with aggregates made from recycled “old” concrete from demolished structures and “new” aggregates made from concrete returned to the batch plant from the job site;
Concrete BlockConcrete mortar was used by the Romans as early as 200 B.C. to bind shaped stones together in the construction of buildings. During the reign of the Roman emperor Caligula, in 37-41 A.D. , small blocks of precast concrete were used as a construction material in the region around present-day Naples, Italy. Much of the concrete technology developed by the Romans was lost after the fall of the Roman Empire in the fifth century. It was not until 1824 that the English stonemason Joseph Aspdin developed portland cement, which became one of the key components of modern concrete.
Cement use in the historic cemeteries of the French Quarter Although most concrete crypts and mausoleums are built in low-lying areas, where water could easily destroy a coffin, its not entirely true for the city of New Orleans. Basically, the majority, if not all, of the crypts and mausoleums in the cemeteries of New Orleans were built along the lines of traditional European cemeteries and to represent the architecture of a French city. In fact, many visitors to New Orleans have stated that these cemeteries do look like a miniature city-a “city of the dead”1 (Fig. 2 and 3). Most of the crypts and mausoleums in New Orleans are constructed of brick covered with a cement plaster (see Fig. 4). Even when these crypts and mausoleums need repair work done, workers use a mixture of both lime and cement. This combination does not detract from the original structure.2

Unlike playing the card tables in Las Vegas, the strategic benefits of a well-managed agent credit card program are proven and time-tested. Community banks gain bottom-line revenue, stronger customer relationships, and a way to expand a banks brand. Community bankers are able to realize these benefits by offering competitive credit card products. In 2002, ACB Card Services selected InfiCorp Holdings, Inc. to offer the ACBInficorp Agent Bankcard Alliance as a turnkey agent bank credit card solution. Since that time, a number of ACB members have seen significant results.

The wood bedroom furniture antidumping petition, which began as a legal battle pitting U.S. manufacturers against Chinese manufacturers, quickly escalated into a multi-fronted war that also encompasses heated opposition by a group of U.S. furniture retailers and Furniture Brands International. Representing the Committee for Legal Trade is Doug Bassett, vice president of sales for Vaughan-Bassett Furniture Co. of Galax, VA. Responding to questions on behalf of the Furniture Retailers of America is Michael Veitenheimer, vice president, secretary and general counsel for The Bombay Co. of Ft. Worth, TX. The DOC. found that all seven are in fact guilty of illegal dumping. No amount of spinning by the PR firms and lawyers representing the other side can change that central fact.
> Hooker Furniture of Martinsville, NC, announced it has signed a Letter of intent to purchase the assets of New York-based Opus Designs Furniture LLC, a specialist in youth bedroom furniture. The transaction is expected to be completed by the end of the year. The acquisition would provide a solid foundation for Hooker to build a strong youth bedroom program at more moderate price points, with a more comprehensive product line and with superior sourcing arrangements compared to (Hookers) current SmartKids youth furniture Line, said Paul Toms Jr., chairman, chief executive and president of Hooker.

“There are [more than] 30 million Americans who have no health insurance and another 20 million who have inadequate health insurance,” says Rep. Louis Stokes (D0Ohio), chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus Health Brain Trust. “It is mandatory that we begin to try and give Americans–particularly minorities–adequate health care as a right.” The Bush plan would give people not covered by Medicaid tax credits, and families making less than $80,000 a year tax deductions to pay for medical costs. He would also pass laws to ensure that even chronically ill patients could receive health insurance. The plan has received a cool reception on Capitol Hill, and alternate proposals, including a full-scale, government-paid national health insurance plan, are under development. But what does America really want for its health care system? The views are many.
FOR THE uninitiated, medical and health insurance is a relatively new class of insurance in Malaysia compared to motor, fire or personal accident insurance. A lot has been written about it, but there continues to be confusion over what health insurance really is.

When some chiropractors hear “public health,” they think “childhood vaccinations.” This immediately turns them off, and they close their minds. However, indulge me for a moment. What about all the other public health (PH) services? These include exercise counseling; advice on correct posture; scoliosis screening; blood pressure checks; smoking cessation assistance; mammography; prostate cancer screening; seat belt usage; and eye exams - to name a few. My son practices with me, and he and I attended the senior citizens health fair sponsored by our congresswoman, who just happens to have worked in my office as my CA for four years. At this health fair we did not give posture screens or check for subluxations, fixations or misalignments - we checked blood pressure! Everyone knows that the “seasoned citizens” population is fast-growing, and blood pressure is a great concern for the over-50 age group. My son and I checked the blood pressure of 225 people in the course of five hours. We also had the opportunity to talk face-to-face with everyone, and listen to their other concerns: low back pain/stiffness, knee pain, hip pain, and all forms of cervical complaints.
With an increased number of “seasoned citizens” seeking chiropractic care, our practices are in an enviable position to serve the health care needs of these over-65 members of our society. We have many avenues at our disposal, due to our training, experience, and patient base. Since our professions beginning, we have stressed the holistic approach to good health, which includes, but is not limited to: nutrition, exercise, posture, mental well-being, and preventative health care issues such as cholesterol levels, blood pressure, and osteoporosis measurements, which help safeguard our patients health. Each of the foregoing also presents an excellent opportunity to increase our visibility in our community. Involvement in public health projects and programs also affords our profession some good public relations, because we would be stressing health care methods that are not necessarily chiropractic procedures. Thereby, we could conceivably increase our patient base as well (which by all accounts is too small now). Most of these health care checkup services can be performed at venues such as health fairs, patient appreciation days, and during a routine in-office patient visit. If a condition such as increased blood pressure, decreased bone density, or high cholesterol level is discovered during such multiphasic public health screenings, a referral to the appropriate practitioner can be made, which helps secure our position in the public health care arena as a “member of the team.”Another beneficial side-effect can be that of referrals to us from the practitioners to whom we send our patients for co-managed care.
The recommendations include the following: a chiropractic scope of practice encompassing patient evaluation and care for neuromusculoskeletal conditions, such as back pain, neck pain, headache, and joint sprains and strains; referral to chiropractic care through consultation with the patients primary care physician or another VHA provider; and integration of chiropractic care into the VHA in such a way that the chiropractor, the patients primary care clinician, and other VHA providers develop a collaborative treatment regimen for each patient with neuromusculoskeletal and other health problems. The committee is comprised of six chiropractors, four other health care professionals, and one public adviser. “The key here is that the VHA system is going to a primary care model system where everyone has a primary care physician and the care of the veterans is coordinated by the primary care physicians,” said American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) Past President Warren Jones, M.D., Ridgeland, Miss., who serves on the committee.

THIS week Fort William braces itself for yet another invasion of thousands of spectators who will witness 500 adrenaline junkie mountain bikers spend two days crashing through woodland. The Mountain Bike World Cup, which kicks off on Tuesday, is part of a series of up to 10 events taking place in Europe, Canada and Australia from April to September. Scotlands fantastic terrain, lots of natural trails and enlightened land access laws set the scene and then, in 2001, the Forestry Commission started to develop some of the best single- track trail centres in the world. The Commission had to become more inventive in how to bring people back to the countryside after the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease hit the rural economy, and mountain biking seems to have done the trick.
This years mountain biking course for the Sunflower State Games will be a hilly affair Lyle Gooden is the commissioner of mountain biking for the Sunflower State Games. Last years mountain bike course for the Sunflower State Games was a flatter, faster trail than this one will be.

PORTLAND, Ore.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–June 29, 1998–ChiroNet, a chiropractic health organization network headquartered in Portland, Oregon, was chosen as the top Chiropractic health care delivery organization in an independent survey. This confidential survey of chiropractors involved in managed care from Oregon and southwest Washington was completed on June 15, 1998, by performance Marketing Group of Vancouver, Washington. 89% of all excellent ratings given by providers were given to ChiroNet. Areas rated included: reputation, management, credentialing, level of paperwork, contribution to professional development, claims staff, preference of affiliation and total value to the physician. The physicians in the survey participate in a range of one to four Chiropractic networks, with the average per respondent of 2.4 networks. Physicians participating in the survey represented members of American Chiropractic Network (ACN), AXIS, Alternare, and ChiroNet. Of special significance is the estimate of their total practice coming through affiliation of individual networks: ACN (7%), AXIS (4%), Alternare (2%), and ChiroNet (22%). Here is the breakdown of the top two networks rated by chiropractors in each category:
As a group, the 50,000 chiropractic professionals make up the third largest health care provider in the United States, after the medical and dental professions. They are also the largest alternative medicine provider of natural health care. There is very promising research evidence supporting the cost-effectiveness, low risk, and high patient satisfaction of chiropractic health services with respect to spinal pain and related conditions. Despite the demand, advantages, and efficacy of chiropractic health services, the chiropractic profession is not being integrated into the health care system. Doctors of chiropractic are largely ignored, and their progress is impeded by strong economic groups. Thus, the American public is not receiving the full benefit of natural alternatives for health care. The chiropractic profession has struggled with its definition and adaptation to the modern needs and demands of the health care market and the American public. It is urgent that the chiropractic profession reengineer itself. A strategic plan is needed to integrate chiropractic services into the health care market to improve the quantity and quality of natural health services rendered to the American public. Although many of the chiropractic professions leaders have eloquently written and discussed many critical issues, these discussions have not resulted in a strategic plan for the chiropractic profession. Since the profession has been without guidance or direction, it has reacted to health care market forces, instead of anticipating and acting on the health care market.

Private Investigator210 Huntington St. Bangor, ME 04401
When F.M. Chris Rey moved back to St. Louis after a career elsewhere in the military and federal government, he set out to get licensed as a private investigator — and was astounded to learn that licenses were not required in his home state. He quickly got involved with the Missouri Association of Private Investigators and has worked for years to get a state law passed requiring licensure. This year, the bill finally succeeded. The law is already on the books, but licensing is not expected to begin until early 2009. More than 30 other states, including neighboring Arkansas, Kansas, Illinois and Iowa, already require licenses. That, Rey said, was part of the problem. Investigators from other states could come into Missouri and act as they pleased, but with Missouri having no license requirement, private eyes often couldnt technically work in Illinois, for example, without getting that states license. Thats because there cant be a reciprocal relationship unless both states require licenses.
Most of us have strange preconceptions of the role of the private investigator, but these were dispelled by an informative and humorous presentation by David Staves of Legal Services UK Investigations. David is a member of the Association of British Investigators and a member of the Certificated Bailiffs Association and has ensured a reputation for operating within a strict code of practice offering a reputation for total professionalism. This experience resulted in a very interesting video presentation and our members are now much more aware of the role of the private investigator and the part surveillance plays in that role.
